# Stop Order

## What is a Stop Order?

### Stop Market

A [market order](/lit-docs/trading-guide/order-types/market-order.md) that is activated when the price reaches the selected stop price. Stop orders are generally used to help limit losses and lock in profits

### Stop Limit

A [limit order](/lit-docs/trading-guide/order-types/limit-order.md) that is activated when the price reaches the selected stop price

## Place a Stop Order

* Pick **Stop Market** or **Stop Limit** from the order type dropdown
* Set your **Stop Price** manually or move the line directly on the chart
* Set your order **Size** in USDC or asset units
* Press **Long** or **Short** to place your order

**Stop Orders** can also be placed directly on the chart using the [**Plus Sign**](/lit-docs/trading-guide/trade-on-chart/plus-sign-menu.md) menu.

{% hint style="info" %}
Moving a **Stop Long** below market price or a **Stop Short** above market price will result in the order triggering **immediately** as a [**Market Order**](/lit-docs/trading-guide/order-types/market-order.md) or [**Limit Order**](/lit-docs/trading-guide/order-types/limit-order.md) depending on stop type.
{% endhint %}
